Homemade Spicy Tomato Sauce

Prep Time: 5 Minutes | Cook Time: 45 Minutes | Total Time: 50 Minutes
Serves: 2-4

I grew up on store bought tomato sauce (shoutout to Tomato & Basil Classico) and it wasn't until recently that I've started making my own and realized how quick and easy it really is! All you need are a few base ingredients, tomatoes, oil, salt, pepper, oregano and from there you can add all your favorite flavors to make it entirely your own!

Here's our favorite tomato sauce that has a hint of spice infused with delicious notes of roasted garlic. This easy to make recipe is low maintenance and will be ready in under an hour!

  • 28 oz. Can Crushed Tomato (San Marzano / Plum)

  • 1 Yellow Onion

  • 3 Stems Basil

  • 4 Cloves Garlic

  • 2 T. Coconut Oil / Olive Oil

  • 2 tsp. Salt (More to taste)

  • 1 tsp. Oregano

  • 1 tsp. Red Chili Pepper Flakes

  • 1/2 tsp. Corn Starch (optional)

  • 1/4 tsp. Pepper

  1. In a medium sauce pan heat coconut oil, add garlic, 1 tsp. salt, pepper and oregano. Sauté on med. heat for 5 minutes.

  2. Once your garlic has browned add crushed tomatoes, peeled and quartered onion and basil. Bring to a simmer, cover and let sit over low - medium heat for 30 minutes, stirring frequently.

  3. With tongs discard onion and basil. Add remaining salt, red pepper flakes, pepper and corn starch. Continue to simmer over low for an additional 10 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste and remove from heat.

  4. Add it to your favorite pasta, use it as a pizza sauce or serve it with a fresh Stromboli and enjoy :)
